A Comparison Between Postal Assistants & Sorting Assistants

Postal Assistants & Sorting Assistants have the same salary package at the initial stage. The roles and responsibilities of both postal assistants & sorting assistants are almost same with minor differences. The sorting assistant’s job is to sort the letter for each area with in Post office limit whereas the duties & responsibilities of postal assistant may vary according to the work location. Generally Postal Assistant works in Mails, Delivery, Dispatch, Registration, Speed Post, Parcel, Money Order, Sub account, Accounts and savings Bank & savings certificates departments of a post office. The main function of sorting assistant is to sort the mails based on pin codes and the main function of postal assistant is to perform any combination of tasks in a Post Office, such as receiving letters& parcels, sell postage & revenue stamps, postal cards and stamped envelopes etc.

Exam Pattern

Postal assistant exam mainly consist of Two Papers.

1) Aptitude Test – Paper1

One advantage of this test is that there is no negative marking. It consists of 4 parts and duration will be 2 hours. Each part carrying 25 questions with 25 marks.

  • Part A-General Knowledge
  • Part B-Mathematics
  • Part C-English
  • Part D-Reasoning & Analytical Ability

2) Computer / Typing Test-Paper 2

The duration of this test is 30 minutes and test will be conducted on computer keyboard. It consists one passage of 450 words in English or 375 words in Hindi to be typed with a minimum speed of 30 words per minute or 25 words per minute respectively

Educational Qualification

  • 10+2 standard or 12th class pass from recognized university or Board of school education or Board of Secondary education with English as a compulsory subject.
  • The applicants should have studied in local language of the state or union territory of the concerned postal circle or in Hindi as a subject at least in Matriculation level or equivalent.
